3 Vocal Exercises for Improving Diction Suzy S. Have you ever been listening to the radio or a performance, enjoying the song, when you realize you have no clue what words are being said? For some genres, this might be simply part of the style. For others, it can be pretty frustrating for listeners! This is where diction and articulation come into play, and its a skill that takes practice. If youd like to improve your diction, here are a few helpful exercises to try: Lip trills (or motor mouth). Lip trills are an excellent warm-up that will relax your lips. Tension in the mouth or lips can contribute to poor enunciation. Try working your way up the scale or try different warm-up exercises while doing this, keeping your air flow even. If youre having trouble with this, use your fingers to lightly push your cheeks in, which will give your lips some added support. Record yourself. Often, were so focused on all of the other details of the song (staying in tune, hitting especially high or low notes, even just remembering the words), that we simply arent a good judge of our diction. Try recording yourself singing the piece youre working on, and listen back critically. If you discover certain words are falling, highlight or mark them in your score so you remember. Simply reading aloud or practicing tongue-twisters can also be great to record, so you can keep track of your progress. Isolate the vowels and the consonants. Even though it may sound counter-productive, paying particular attention to the vowels in your words can offer an instant improvement, not only to your sound (as we discussed in this article) but to how clear you are. Try isolating each by singing a simple song (Row, Row, Row Your Boat, for example), but replacing all of the words with their corresponding vowel sounds. Next, add the consonants back in and make sure each word is crisp and clear. Be especially aware of diphthongs, which is when there are two distinct vowel sounds within a syllable, such as the ay in day. In this case, its best to hold the first vowel for the majority of the note, then connect the second part, which will sound clearer to the audience. Of course, the singing style youre going for can change your focus. For example, blues or jazz singers might want to try a more conversational tone and less articulation. Need help determining this? Say what you like â€" it blazes, boils, or burns â€" but really it does none of these things. It turns hydrogen into helium and converts mass to energy â€" but, sure, it is as hot as hell.The Planets.You know these: Mercury, Venus, Eart h, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. We don’t talk about Pluto anymore.Planets need to clear their neighbourhood â€" meaning they have to be big enough to have destroyed all in their orbit.Other Celestial Objects.Dwarf planets (that’s where Pluto comes in), asteroids, comets, and all sorts of other bits and bobs. They are all held together by the Sun’s gravity.And Beyond our Solar System?After Neptune and the Kuiper Belt, you have the interstellar medium â€" the space between stars. What happens there? We’re not quite sure just yet.The Life Cycle of a Star.Stars form, release huge amounts of energy for billions of years and then, when their hydrogen has burned up, they and disappear â€" or else, explode into supernovae or become black holes.In short, that’s that, but let’s have a look at the main stages in greater detail. If you want more detail, check out our article on the lifecycle of stars.Nebulae and Protostars.Star formation begins from the debris of prev ious stars â€" the gas and dust left over from past astrophysical phenomena.These clouds we call nebulae. A nebula will float around in space, under conditions of great cold. As they become colder, their gases become denser, and their gravitational strength grows.Slowly, they pull in all this dust into the nebula core, which slowly becomes warmer with the pressure. As they grow, they become protostars. The sun is the centre of our solar systemMain Sequence Stars.Stars remain protostars when they are still growing and become main sequence stars when they reach stability.Stars will remain main sequence stars for ninety percent of their life.Dwarfs and Supernovae.Toward the end of their life, stars run out of fuel. Without this energy, they cannot sustain their shape.The smaller stars become white dwarfs â€" dense stars that cool down from the outside. They tend to fade away.The bigger ones, as the result of various chemical reactions, collapse in seconds â€" causing a supernova that is brighter than a galaxy.Black Holes.The very biggest stars become black holes as the result of collapsing in one themselves. Hugely dense, their gravity is massive â€" meaning they pull everything in that is around them.Is there Alien Life in the Universe?With all this action, there’s quite an interesting question. Surely, we can’t be the only consciousnesses in the universe to have the honour of ap preciating all this drama?Maybe we are, maybe we’re not. Find out below: Although at times it may feel as if there are infinite sources of stress, generally college stress can be broken down into six categories: prior academic record, social influences, family, finances, career direction, and situational problems (such as illness or drug problems). Most students think that stress is caused by outside factors. They might say that a test, a professor, or a paper is stressing them out. But stress is really an internal process. Therefore, its important to have some strategies for dealing with stress in order to put your reactions to it in perspective. As you read about the six categories of stress, remember that stress is natural, it is internal, it is often an overreaction to a specific situation, and IT CAN BE CONTROLLED. 1. Prior academic record. Students who have a shaky academic past may feel that they cant succeed in college. On the other hand, students who have a 4.0 average may feel stress to keep their stellar grade point average. Either way, your past history as a learner affects your stress level. 2. Social influences. You probably have realized that dealing with your friends can often be stressful. A fight with your roommate, breaking up with a boyfriend or girlfriend, meeting new people-all of these situations can be stressful. In fact, even situations we would consider to be positive social factors, such as falling in love or socializing with really good friends, can cause a stressful reaction. Overall, however, having good friends and social support will actually reduce your stress levels because you have someone to confide in. 3. Family. You may feel pressure to so well in college in order to make your family proud, you may feel stress because you have moved away from your family, or because of family crises that arise. But like social influences, your family can also be a source of support to help you when you experience a lot of stress. 4. Finances. Financial stress usually begins in college (and never ends!) because students take out a loan to attend college, get jobs to help pay for college, or have to maintain a certain grade point average to keep their scholarships. Many college students are also responsible for paying bills and are gaining responsibility for their financial security. In addition, college students get their own credit cards, which can lead to great financial stress if used inappropriately. We know numerous college students who graduate not only with a diploma, but also with student loans and a stack of credit card debt. All of these things can cause stress, especially for students who are handling their own finances for the first time. 5. Career direction. So whats your major? What the heck are you going to do with that? You may have heard similar comments from friends and relatives. Everyone (perhaps yourself included) wants to know what you will do with your life after college. The less sure you are about your career direction, the more stress you might feel about it. You may even be concerned that youll never find your direction. On the other hand, students who have already decide on a career might also feel stress because they are concerned about achieving their goals. 6. Situational problems. Certain stresses are unexpected and sometimes devastating. You may become ill during the term, experience the death of someone close to you, among many other things. As will all the categories of stress you feel overwhelmed by situational problems, seek help from a counselor on campus or someone you can talk to about these concerns.
